I have no doubt that Jason Carlson is more versed in the ways of the emergent movement than I am. This video doesn't present his entire message, so I can only comment on the portion I saw.
The books I've been reading by members of this emergent movement have been a breath of fresh air. I haven't seen the proclamation that "all" truth is relative, but rather truth derived from traditional ideation and man-made doctrine is relative. (What if Martin Luther had held to the absolute "truths" of his day?) There is certainly room for discovery on the continuum of reformation, rather than holding to tradition--which our Saviour so solemnly warned against. Our tiny finite minds haven't figured out the entirety of an Infinite God---who may not always fit into the rigid doctrines we've established. (He's probably a tad bit more transcendent than that!)
I have never been to a church that describes itself as emergent or emerging, so I can't claim absolute expertise, but their words resonate a response to some traditionalists that are burdensome rather than freeing. Click here to reply to this post
